Car Rental in Malta

Renting a car is the best way to get around Malta comfortably and at your own pace. Where to find parking in Malta? What documents are required? Where to rent a cheap car? All the information you need is here!

Renting a car in Malta can be quite useful for getting around the towns and villages and getting to more remote places such as the Dingli Cliffs. To get around Malta by car, bear in mind that you drive on the left, just like in Britain. If this is new for you, don't worry, just take it slow and drive with caution and you'll get used to it in no time!

Most Maltese roads are two-way and there are hardly any motorways. On the plus side, there are no tolls either, so you can drive around Malta for free.

As a tip, we recommend avoiding rush hour traffic in Malta's most touristy towns and villages. At 2 pm and 7 pm, traffic increases considerably in these areas of the island.

Rules of the road

When driving a car on the island you should be aware of the speed limits in Malta. On this island, as on Gozo and Comino, the speed limit is 80 km/h (49 mph) on main roads and 50 km/h (31 mph) on urban roads. You'll see signs indicating the speed limit for each section.

At certain times of the day, you have to pay to enter Valletta by car. Our recommendation is to park near the bus station and walk to the historic centre of the capital.

Parking zones

Parking for free in Malta is a very difficult task. In cities such as Valletta, St. Julian's or Sliema there are a lot of cars and few free parking areas. Our advice is to park at your hotel or in the free car parksat shopping centres.

Necessary documentation

As in many EU countries, to rent a car in Malta you must be 21 years of age or older and have held a driving licence for at least 2 years. If you're travelling with very young children, they must be in an adapted car seat.
