Gozo

Natural landscapes, historical heritage, the Ggantija Temples and even what remains of the famous Blue Window. Discover the rural charm of Gozo and how to get to the second most important island in Malta.

Gozo is the second-largest island in the archipelago and the only one, besides Malta, which is inhabited. This island, with more than 30,000 permanent residents, is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Mediterranean.

The island is famous for its countless tourist attractions, among the most famous are the Ggantija Temples, various hiking routes and its intense blue-coloured waters, ideal for a refreshing dip or going diving.

The natural beauty of Gozo is so stunning that Homer was inspired by the island to write The Odyssey, where he tells how the nymph Calypso held Ulysses for 7 years, seducing him on an island paradise.

Although Gozo is a destination that truly thrives on tourism, it has managed to retain its rural vibe that sets it apart from Malta. Throughout the island, you'll find farms and a myriad of churches and parishes. Gozo is a deeply Catholic island.

If you're planning on visiting Gozo, don't forget about the charming capital, Victoria.

The capital: Victoria

Victoria is the capital and most important city in Gozo. Although the locals still refer to it by its old name, Rabat, it was renamed Victoria in the year 1887 to honour the then Queen of England.

The most beautiful area of Victoria is its Citadel which dates back to medieval times. The first community of people to call the island home were the Knights of the Order and those of nobility who arrived from Aragon. From the highest point in the city, you'll have some amazing views of Gozo.

Inside the Citadel you'll find the Cathedral of the Assumption, which is famous for its frescos in the false dome, the island's old prison, Gozo's Natural Museum and Republic Street, the main shopping street.

What to see in Gozo

These are some of the attractions in Gozo which simply cannot be missed if you're visiting this Maltese island:

  • Ggantija Temples: these World Heritage-listed megalithic temples are the oldest in the world, predating even the likes of Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Egypt. They were built between 3600 and 3200 BC and were dedicated to the Goddess of Fertility.
  • The Blue Window: or what is left of it. This singular rock which had been the symbol of Malta for centuries was destroyed by a storm in 2017. The natural beauty of this area has kept tourists coming here. As well as this, if the sea is calm, you'll be able to see the detached rock sticking out over the water.
  • Xlendi Cove: The paradisical weather and the lively atmosphere of this small cove are perfect for snorkelling, chilling out on the beach and enjoying a day in the sun.
  • Fungus Rock: this peculiar rock in Dwerja Bay will be instantly recognizable by fans of Game of Thrones as the place where Khaleesi and Khal Drogo's wedding took place.
